Bishop Mary Froiland is stepping down from her position in the South Central Synod of Wisconsin one year early. Health issues led her to this decision. Earlier this year, people were asked to lift up names of pastors, whom they see as possibilities for bishop. My name was lifted up, and I am honored, if not somewhat unsettled. I do not feel up to the task. However, I know God will give me what I need to do what I’m called to do. I also know I would be perfectly happy to continue my ministry in the parish.

Ten people allowed their names to stay on the list as possibilities. This is not a nomination because that happens on the first ballet at synod assembly. The potential nominees spoke at two forums where we introduced ourselves and answered questions. You can find video of these forums on scswbishopelection.org. (I was sick that week but chose not to take that as a sign from God to bow out of the process.)

In talking with others on the “the list,” many of us feel we are called simply to be part of this process. We don’t know if we are called to be bishop. Time and the Holy Spirit will tell. We just want to see what the Holy Spirit is up to. I still feel called to Faith but know that can change. It would be difficult to leave here, but again God will give me what I need to answer God’s call.

It’s a relief to know God will provide. If you find yourself in a challenging or anxiety-producing situation, I hope you will try this approach. Remind yourself that God is at work in your life and the lives of others. If you feel called to do a difficult thing, know that God will give you the courage and the wisdom you need. Look for the Holy Spirit at work in your life and follow the Spirit.

The synod assembly is in the Wisconsin Dells on May 5th and 6th. Please pray for the assembly and the election process, and we will look for the Holy Spirit at work.
